Let’s Talk About IP: Protect Your Genius

Alright, let’s be real — ideas are free, execution is expensive. But when it comes to IP (intellectual property), it’s the execution you better lock down tight. Why? Because in this age of “inspiration,” it only takes one scroll, one screenshot, or one “I saw this and thought of you” for your idea to become community property.

Here’s the game:

• If you create it, protect it. Your work doesn’t have to be a billion-dollar patent. It could be a framework, a process, or a one-liner tagline that suddenly finds itself living rent-free in someone else’s slide deck.
• NDAs ain’t magic, but they help. People scoff at NDAs, but they set the tone. It’s less about legal action and more about signaling, “Hey, I take this seriously.”
• Ownership is visibility. If you’re sharing your big idea on a call with 12 people and you’re the only one without your name on the slide, congrats — you just got ghosted from your own concept.

• Don’t get hyped over “great idea!” compliments. Make sure you’re credited, not just clapped for.
• Write it down. Timestamp it. Email it to yourself. Use whatever little tricks you have.
• File for that trademark if it’s a brand, slogan, or name. Don’t wait. Someone’s always watching.

My Take:
I’ve seen entire “innovation projects” that were just rebranded versions of someone else’s brainstorm from 6 months ago. And guess who got the credit? Hint: It wasn’t the brainstormer. If you’re not protecting your work, someone else is already drafting “their idea” using your notes.

This ain’t paranoia — it’s preparation. Protect your genius. Lock down your IP. If you don’t own it, you’re renting it.
